REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, AUGUST 9, 2001

 

            The Board of Trustees:

 

·         Approved minutes of previous meeting.

 

·         Acknowledged annual reports from administrators and supervisors.

 

·          Discussed the Columbia High School building construction project.

 

·        Discussed the new CHS sign and approved the sign to be moved to the north end of the campus near the gym.

 

·        Authorized the district to accept a quote from Evergreen Landscaping to install an irrigation system on the baseball field and to work on the football field irrigation system, and authorized payment using General Obligation Bond funds.

 

·        Accepted a bid from APAC to pave two runways for pole vaulting and high jumping at Gardner Stadium and a parking area on Bryan Avenue, and authorized payment using General Obligation Bond funds.

 

·        Transferred interest earnings in the amount of $15,312.33 from Sixteenth Section Funds to the District Maintenance Fund.

 

·        Approved the Claims Docket for payment of accounts.

 

·        Acknowledged the report on bus repairs/expenses and the monthly report on the use of school buses for special events.

 

·        Granted permission for out-of-state travel.

 

·        Accepted a cash donation in the amount of $500.00 from the Exxon Educational Foundation.

 

·        Approved a request from Mrs. Sharon Russell, Director of Special Services, to dispose of old school records.

 

·        Approved requests from administrators/supervisors to dispose of the following equipment that is beyond repair: printer, tag #168; spread/net 2400, tag #1959; laptop computer, tag #2080; and twenty (20) lab computers, tag #s 1206, 1207, 1208, 1236, 1237, 1241, 1214, 1246, 1249, 1257, 1261, 1264, 1268, 1282, 1283, 1310, 802, 805, 808, & 809.

 

·        Approved requests from employees, living out of the district, for their children to attend district schools: Heather & Issac White (CHS) and Zachary White (JMS), children of Robert & Lisa White; Lora A. Eakes (JMS), daughter of Angie Adams; Lauren Welch (CPS, 2-3), daughter of Cindy Welch; Tyler Taylor (CPS, K-1), son of Stephanie Taylor; Alexis McCarthy (CPS, K-1), daughter of Malia McCarthy; Jenna Smith (CPS, K-1), daughter of Angela Smith; Zachary Stringer (CPS, K-1), son of Kim Stringer; Kristy N. Cuevas (CHS) and Randy B. Cuevas (JMS), children of Melissa Cuevas Polk; and Ty Saucier, (CPS, K-1) son of Melissa Saucier.

 

·        Approved a request from Principal Gayle Knight for the CPS, 2-3 PTA to conduct two fundraisers (candy and gift sale).

 

·        Gave second approval of revisions to polices GBN "Suspension, Removal, and Non-renewal of Employment of Certified Employees," GCL/GDL "Requirements for a Year's Experience for All Personnel," IHA/IHE "Grading, Reporting, Promotion and Retention," and JFB "Valedictorian/Salutatorian."

 

·        Approved the revised 2001-2002 Ad Valorem Tax Request Worksheet.

 

·        Rescinded its action of April 12, 2001, with regard to the one-time state salary supplement for the 2001-2002 school year.

 

·        Accepted employment resignations submitted by Mary Bass, bus driver; Diane Haddox, cashier at CES; and Susan White, TA at CPS, K-1.

 

·        Approved the employment of the following persons for the 2001-2002 school year pending the results of a current background check as required by State law: Malia McCarthy, special education teacher at JMS, pending emergency certification; Brandi E. Deroche, math teacher at CHS, pending certification; Michael Novinski, social studies teacher at CHS; Connie Copeland, math/tutor teacher at CHS for four hours per day; Cynthia Hall, Gloria Quinn, and Melissa Cuevas Polk, bus drivers; Diane Haddox, substitute cafeteria worker; Laura Horne, cook at CHS; Cindy Welch, cashier at CES; Jeannette Hutchins, TA at CPS, K-1; and Keisha Brown, substitute janitor at CPS, 2-3.

 

·        Approved Sonya Gates, Beth Boutwell, Cindy Shields and Regina Allen to receive a supplement for fifty hours of work to train personnel on integrating technology into the curriculum and training new personnel on computer competency skills in addition to their regular contractual workdays.

 

·        Granted permission for Mrs. Sharon Russell, Director of Special Education, to purchase the Special Education Automatic Software (SEAS) program from Computer Automation Systems, Inc., which is a single source item.

 

·         Received the monthly financial status report.

 

·        Heard a report from Superintendent Lyle on the student enrollment count for the 2001-2002 school year.

 

·        Was informed by Dr. Long that the District received a Mississippi Reading Sufficiency Grant in the amount of $88,700.00.

 

·         Discussed confidential legal matters in executive session.
