REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, SEPTEMBER 17, 2007

 

            The Board of Trustees:

 

·        Approved minutes of previous meetings.

 

·        Was informed of the 2007-2008 student enrollment count.

 

·        Heard a report from Mrs. Cathy Creel, Director of Curriculum/Instruction/Testing on the 2007 Mississippi Statewide Accountability System results.

 

·        Received the monthly financial status report.

 

·        Approved the claims docket for payment of current accounts.

 

·        Received monthly reports on bus repairs/expenses and the use of school buses for special events.

 

·        Approved requests to dispose of the following equipment that is beyond repair: seventeen computers, tag #s 3045, 3047, 3044, 3046, 3049, 3051, 3040, 3048, 3042, 3043, 3050, 3041, 2984, 2987, 4528, 1668, & 3460; two ice machines, tag #s  290 & 3341; five printers, tag #s 3356, 3109, 3110, 4563, & 3434, two card catalogs, tag #s 914 & 915; one typewriter, tag # 1459; and one overhead projector, tag # 1520.

 

·        Accepted proposals for school pictures for the 2007-2008 school year.  (CHS & JMS - Bruckner’s Photography and CES & CPS - Mississippi School Pictures)

 

·        Approved the following fundraiser activities during the 2007-2008 school year:  CHS Basketball Boosters sell advertising signs September 17 – December 2007; CHS Varsity Cheerleaders sell Wildcat spirit items during football season; CHS Slow-Pitch Softball Team sell Christmas ornaments October 20-November 15, 2007; CHS Fine Arts Boosters hold a cooking show November 3, 2007, and sell program advertising and other items related to the CHS Musical February 29 & March 1, 2008; JMS Band sell cookie dough October 29 – November 12, 2007; and CPS PTA sell catalog items September 28 – October 16, 2007. 

 

·        Approved requests from administrators for permission for students and chaperons to travel out-of-state on field trips: CPS 3rd grade students to tour the Mile Branch Settlement & Old McDonald’s Farm in Franklinton, LA, October 18, 2007; CES 4th & 5th grade Challenge classes to tour the Gulf Coast Exploreum in Mobile, AL, December 5, 2007;  JMS 6th grade Challenge class to attend  Space Camp in Huntsville, AL,   March 28-30, 2008; and JMS 7th & 8th grade Challenge classes to tour Washington, D.C., June 1-7-2008.

 

·        Approved requests for permission to travel out-of-state to attend workshops.

 

·        Approved a request from Angela Jefferson, custodian for central offices, for permission for her daughter, Jasmine Jefferson, to attend Columbia High School for the 2007-2008 school year.

 

·        Authorized the District to submit a National Education Association Foundation grant application in the amount of $1,000.00 to purchase library books.

 

·        Accepted a cash donation in the amount of $700.00 to be placed in the Columbia High School Positive Incentive Fund.

 

·        Adopted a resolution to renew the 3-mill, 10-year levy for 15 years for the purpose of making repairs and alterations to the school buildings of the District.

 

·        Approved the FY 2007 final amended budget.

 

·        Authorized the District to continue the French students exchange program with the high school in Etampes, France and granted approval for members of French I, II, Advanced Placement French classes and chaperons to travel out-of-the-country April 10-22-2008. (This trip will be financed by the families of the students who choose to participate.)

 

·        Adopted a partnership agreement between Columbia School District (Columbia Primary School) and Pearl River Valley Opportunity, Inc. Head Start/Early Head Start for the 2007-2008 school year. 

 

·        Gave first approval of the job description for Special Education Personal Care Assistant.

 

·        Accepted employment resignations submitted by Amanda Newsom, teacher at Columbia Elementary School, effective August 31, 2007; Donna Blansett, cafeteria worker at Jefferson Middle School, effective August 24, 2007; and Jonell Conerly, custodian at Columbia Elementary School, effective September 6, 2007.

 

·        Authorized the District to submit an application for a one-year interim certificate for Mr. John R. Browning as a Day Treatment teacher at Columbia Elementary School for the 2007-2008 school year.

 

·        Approved the following personnel recommendations for the 2007-2008 school year: Jonell Conerly be changed from a full-time bus driver to a substitute bus driver; Joni Mills be changed from a substitute library assistant to a full-time library assistant at Columbia Primary School; employment of Jerri Forbes as a full-time bus driver; Anthony Cook as a full-time mechanic helper; Karessa Dyess as a cafeteria worker at Columbia Primary School; Monci Lowe and Darlene Gipson as substitute cafeteria workers; Joyce Boutwell, John R. Browning, Michael Lee, Angela May, Ronnie Paige, and Monique Thomas as substitute teachers; Schunta McKenzie as a special education personal care assistant for students with physical disabilities at Columbia High School; Avon McCraw as a 10-month custodian at Columbia Elementary School; John Browning as the Day Treatment teacher at Columbia Elementary School subject to licensure; and Debra Manning as a custodian at Columbia Primary School.

 

·        Received a copy of administrative staff meeting minutes.

 

·        Discussed printing a Strategic Plan brochure, upcoming board development workshops, district facilities, and concerns regarding the time management system delay time between entries which has been corrected.
