REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, SEPTEMBER 15, 2005

 

            The Board of Trustees:

 

  • Approved minutes of previous meeting.

 

  • Declared a state of emergency, proclaimed by the Governor of the State of Mississippi, based on the finding that Hurricane Katrina resulted in an imminent peril to the educational welfare of our children which suspends all policies and procedures which would prohibit a timely response to this disaster and the discharge of our emergency responsibilities. 

 

  • Adopted a resolution authorizing the Superintendent to execute applications for the purpose of obtaining and administering certain federal financial assistance under the Disaster Relief Act of 1974 (Public Law 93-228), amended by Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act of 1988, (Public Law 100-707) and to file them with the Governor’s Authorized Representative.

 

  • Adopted a resolution authorizing the District to make emergency purchases for goods and services due to damage to school district property caused by Hurricane Katrina.

 

  • Received the 2005 Mississippi Statewide Accountability System results and the monthly financial status report.

 

  • Heard a report on district facilities which included an assessment of damages caused by Hurricane Katrina.

 

  • Approved the claims docket for payment of current accounts.

 

·        Received monthly reports on bus repairs/expenses and the use of school buses for special events.

 

  • Approved requests to dispose of the following equipment that is beyond repair: one amplifier, tag #3340; four computers, tag #s 3342, 2664, 1939, & 2003; one laptop computer, tag #3383, two overhead projectors, tag #s 3717 & 2283; thirteen tape players, tag #s 2240, 2238, 2514, 2510, 2515, 2234, 2511, 2475, 2236, 2516, 2513, 2242, & 2512; one color printer, tag #3107; and one VCR, tag #2804.

 

  • Approved a request from Mrs. Gayle Knight, Principal at Columbia Primary School (2-3), for permission to use Mississippi School Pictures, Inc. for all school pictures at CPS during the 2005-2006 school year.

 

  • Gave permission for the JMS Student Council to hold a “Back to School Bash” dance as a fund raiser.

 

  • Granted the Jefferson Middle School sixth grade challenge class permission to travel-out-of-state to Huntsville, AL, to attend Space Camp and the seventh and eighth grade challenge classes’ permission to travel-out-of-state to tour Washington, D.C.

 

  • Approved a request for permission to travel out-of-state.

 

  • Granted permission to discard food service records from the 1999-2000 school year.

 

  • Approved requests from district employees, who reside out of the district, for permission for their children to attend Columbia schools for the 2005-2006 school year: Lora Ann Eakes, daughter of Angie Adams; and Kevin, Kendall, and Faith Haddox, children of Regina Haddox.

 

  • Adopted an addendum to District Policy GARI “Personnel Leave” granting non-licensed, hourly-paid school employees nine (9) additional days of personal leave due to the catastrophic events caused by Hurricane Katrina which will expire June 30, 2006.

 

  • Discussed confidential personnel matters in executive session.

 

  • Approved the employment of Linda Young as a teacher assistant in the Columbia High School Alternative School, Kenneth Lumpkins as assistant boys basketball coach and J.V. boys coach; and Vertia M. Allen, Latasha Betts, Shelly S. Blackard, Misty K. Branch, Hilda Davis, Esther Eation, Dana Gabriel, Kahilla Hakimzadeh, Edna M. Hayes, Bernadine Irvin, Barbara Johnson, Michael R. Lee, Brenda M. Luethje, Kenneth Lumpkins, Brandi McKay, Boothe Miller, Charles R. Murphree, Ronnie L. Paige, Channie L. Reamous, Tamaal A. Rodgers, Theresa M. Sibley, Marie Shepard, Rhonda J. Stringer, Seth D. Stringer, and Tosha L. Taylor as substitute teachers for the 2005-2006 school year.

 

  • Received a list of workshops for school board members’ continuing education training and a copy of minutes of administrative staff meetings.
