REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, FEBRUARY 14, 2008

 

          The Board of Trustees:

 

·        Approved minutes of previous meetings.

 

·        Presented certificates of recognition to Ms. Jennifer Branch, 2008 District Teacher of the Year/CHS Teacher of the Year; Mrs. Sara Davis, JMS Teacher of the Year; Mrs. Summer Smith, CES Teacher of the Year; and Mrs. Amy Eldridge, CPS Teacher of the Year.

 

·        Received certificates of appreciation in celebration of School Board Member Recognition Week in Mississippi, February 17-23, 2008.

 

·        Received the monthly financial status report.

 

·        Heard a report on district facilities.

 

·        Approved the design development for the Columbia Primary School administrative suite addition and granted authorization to advertise for bids.

 

·        Approved the claims docket for payment of accounts.

 

·        Acknowledged the report on bus repairs/expenses and the monthly report on the use of school buses for special events.

 

·        Approved a request to dispose of the following equipment that is beyond repair: five computers, tag #s 3682, 3119, 3690, 1953, 4483; one printer, tag #3065; one server, tag # 2213; and one utility cart, tag #1772.

 

·        Approved requests from school employees for permission for their children to attend Columbia Schools.

 

·        Granted the Jefferson Middle School Annual Staff permission to hold a Valentine Dance on February 15, 2008, as a fund raiser.

 

·        Approved a request for authorization to travel out-of-state.

 

·        Accepted a monetary donation from the Hattiesburg Coca-Cola Bottling Company in the amount of $731.50 to be used for Columbia High School student incentives.

 

·        Authorized the Columbia High School French Club to sell Bon-Bon candy as a fund raiser.

 

·        Granted the Jefferson Middle School Junior Historical Society permission to travel out-of-state on a field trip to visit the Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, Alabama.

 

·        Accepted the AARP Ethel Percy Andrus Legacy Award in the amount of $10,000.00 to continue the CHS positive incentive program. 

 

·        Authorized the purchase of season tickets for the 2008 football season from the New Orleans Saints NFL organization who is the sole source provider.

 

·        Was informed that a community celebration will be held at 1:30 p.m., March 19, 2008, in recognition of Columbia High School receiving the AARP Ethel Percy Andrus Legacy Award.

 

·        Approved amendments to the IDEIA, Part B and Preschool Project for the 2007-2008 school year.

 

·        Approved 2007-2008 budget revisions.

 

·        Approved the 2008-2009 school year calendar.

 

·        Gave first approval of the revised School Board Policy JCE “Dress Code”.       

School Spirit Days

·        Spirit day designation is at the discretion of the building principal

·        Uniform bottoms must be worn

·        Royal blue, gold, or Wildcat wear must be worn

 

·        Approved a request for permission to attach a granite plaque to the Columbia High School building commemorating the CHS Band for winning the State 3-A Marching Championship in 2004 and 2007.

 

·        Discussed personnel and unfinished business in executive session.

 

·        Recognized a favorable evaluation of the Superintendent.

 

·        Accepted the employment resignation of Mrs. Sharon Russell, Director of Special Services, for the purpose of retirement, effective June 30, 2008.

 

·        Approved the employment of the following persons for the remainder of the 2007-2008 school year: Maisha Pittman as a basketball clock operator/bookkeeper; Jackie Watts and Linda Thompson as substitute cafeteria workers; and Larry Donald (Don) Armagost, La’Tonda M. Beasley, Latasha Betts, Brooke Crawley, Ashley Hammond, Joseph Spielmann, Judy B. Tolar, Lori R. Watts, and Vonsha Wash-Weary as substitute teachers.

 

·        Approved the recommendation for continued employment of district administrators for the 2008-2009 school year.

 

·        Heard a report from the Superintendent which included submission of a E2T2 Grant application; the upcoming 2008 Trustee Election scheduled for Saturday, March 1, 2008, 2:00 – 5:00 p.m., in the Crystelle Ford Auditorium Foyer; and MSBA Board Development.

 

·        Approved an agreement between Jobs for Mississippi Graduates and Columbia School District.
