REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, FEBRUARY 14, 2002

            The Board of Trustees:

·        Recognized Mrs. Ruth Crosby, 2002 District Parent of the Year, and Ms. Sheila Burbridge, 2002 Administrator of the Year.  Interim Superintendent, Dr. Thomas H. Blakeney presented certificates to Mrs. Crosby and Ms. Burbridge.

·        Heard a Proclamation, read by Interim Superintendent Blakeney, from Governor Ronnie Musgrove proclaiming the week of February 17-22, 2002, as School Board Member Recognition Week.

·        Received certificates of appreciation.

·        Approved minutes of previous meetings.

·        Heard a report from Mrs. Wanda Sanford on the Columbia High School Entrepreneur class.

·        Received the monthly financial status report.

·        Was informed of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

·        Heard a report on district building projects.

·        Authorized the district to submit a supplementary application for State Public School Building Funds.

·        Approved the Claims Docket for payment of current accounts.

·        Acknowledged the report on bus repairs/expenses and the monthly report on the use of school buses for special events.

·        Approved requests to dispose of the following unusable equipment which is beyond repair: one tape-player, tag #1795; one vacuum cleaner, tag #2404; four computers, tag #s 000014, 1115, 1126, & 144; one typewriter, tag #1443; one fax machine, tag #1717; one overhead projector, tag #2299; two VCRs, tag #s 788 & 3123; one monitor, tag #2027; and one printer, tag #1125.

·        Accepted a cash donation in the amount of $141.36 from Winn Dixie through the Community Pals Program/Community Partners for Education and a grant from Mississippi Power Company in the amount of $2,000.00 to help fund the after school program at CES.

·        Approved requests to travel out-of-state.

·        Approved requests from principals for permission to conduct the following fund raisers:  CHS Band Boosters, pizza sale and a ribeye steak dinner on Saturday, May 4, 2002; JMS Chorus classes, candy sale; and CHS Fast Pitch Booster Club, fish fry on Saturday, March 23, 2002.

·        Authorized the district to enter into blended services agreements with PRVO, which will provide an after-school program for the remainder of the 2001-2002 school year and a program for pre-kindergarten students during the 2002-2003 school session.

·        Tabled the proposed 2002-2003-district school year calendar until the next regular board meeting.

·        Gave first approval of revisions to the following district policies: JBC "Student Admission Policy and Procedures," JBCA "Verification of Residence Policy," JBCB "Non-Resident Students Policy and Procedures," JBCBA "Tuition Policy," JDB "Detention Policy," JDF "Discipline Reporting Procedure," JFB "Valedictorian/Salutatorian Policy," JGCC "Infectious or Contagious Diseases Procedure," JGFA "Emergency Drills Policy," GBAA "Certified Staff Appreciation Awards Policy," and GBAB "Non-Certified Staff Appreciation Awards Policy."

·        Approved the recommendation to expel three students out of school for the remainder of the 2001-2002 school year.

·        Approved amendments to the FY 2002 budget.

·        Granted three employees requests for maternity leave.

·        Accepted employment resignations submitted by Mrs. June Anderson, guidance secretary at CHS; and Mrs. Alita Gipson, TA at CPS, K-1.

·        Approved the continued employment of district administrators, school principals, and assistant principals for the 2002-2003 school session.

·        Approved the employment of Mr. Steven Paul Jones as head football coach and athletic director for the 2002-2003 school session.

·        Heard a report from Interim Superintendent Blakeney which included school board member training, the NSBA Inside School Law and National Affiliate Update Newsletter and a calendar of district events.

·        Discussed confidential legal and personnel matters in executive session.

·        Recessed the meeting until 5:00 p.m., February 21, 2002, for the purpose of hearing a report on the superintendent search.
