REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, SEPTEMBER 13, 2001

 

            The Board of Trustees:

 

·        Approved minutes of previous meeting.

 

·        Heard a report from Architect Randy McCaffrey on district building projects.

 

·        Authorized the Superintendent to execute loan agreements with the State Board of Education to expend State Public School Building funds in constructing a canopy at Jefferson Middle School, renovation of the canopy at Columbia Elementary School, and re-roofing the administration building; and authorized Attorney Richard Foxworth to prepare the necessary Certificates of Title.

 

·        Transferred interest earnings in the amount of $15,822.75 from Sixteenth Section Funds to the District Maintenance Fund.

 

·        Approved the Claims Docket for payment of accounts.

 

·        Acknowledged the report on bus repairs/expenses and the monthly report on the use of school buses for special events.

 

·        Approved a request from a district employee, Mrs. Kim Barber, for her child, Michael Chance Barber, to attend Columbia Primary School.

·        Granted permission to accept a donation of a Geiger Counter from Mississippi State University to be placed in the Columbia High School science department and a donation of a CD burner from the Columbia Primary School PTA.

 

·        Approved requests to conduct the following fundraisers: CHS yearbook staff to participate in McRae's Holiday Benefit Sale; JMS Band, sell of candy, candles, etc. and community discount cards; JMS Beta Club, candles, angel tree, face painting, 25 cent war, jelly bean guess, and air-head candy sale; CES PTA, candy sales; and Fast Pitch Softball Team, sell boiled peanuts during home football games.

 

·        Granted permission for CPS third grades to visit the Miles' Branch Settlement and Old McDonald's Farm in Franklinton, LA, on October 19, 2001; the JMS sixth grade challenge students to attend Space Camp in Huntsville, AL, May 3-5, 2002; and JMS American history class students, Beta Club students, and seventh and eighth grade challenge students to travel out-of-state to Washington, D.C., May 26 - June 1, 2002.

 

·        Approved requests for out-of-state travel.

 

·        Accepted proposals from Buckner's Photography for senior portraits and school day pictures for the 2001-02 school year.

 

·        Gave first approval of revisions to district polices GBBAID "Job Description for School Nurses" and IHA/IHE "Grading, Reporting Promotion & Retention."

 

·        Approved a recommendation to expel two students from school and placement of seven students in the district's alternative program.

 

·        Authorized Columbia High School as a GED test site beginning in January 2002.

 

·        Accepted employment resignations submitted by Joni Beard, TA at CPS, 2-3, effective August 17, 2001; Etoy Spates, TA at JMS, effective August 31, 2001; Diane Schepemaker, CHS cafeteria manager, effective August 24, 2001; Pearlie R. Magee, TA at CES, effective August 31, 2001; Donna Stringer, cafeteria cashier, effective September 14, 2001; and Gloria D. Quinn, bus driver, effective September 14, 2001.

 

·        Approved the employment of Mrs. Rebecca Clarke as a secondary school nurse; Mrs. Holly Carney as an elementary school nurse; Mr. Edward C. Corker as a teacher assistant at Jefferson Middle School; Ms. Yolanda Mingo as a teacher assistant at Columbia Elementary School; Mrs. Jan Mooney as a teacher assistant at Columbia Primary School, K-1; A.D. Lenoir, Denise Forbes, Sherry Ann Fortenberry, Albert Preston, Jason Carney, Adrian Fortenberry, Chris Prine, David McKenzie, Chesterfield Conerly, Pearlie Hendricks, and Robert Carson, off duty police officers, as supervisors for in-school detention and Saturday school at Columbia High School; Vanessa Ashley, Mary Carter, Anita English, Patty Farmer, Angela Forbes, Kristie Gibson, Patsy Norton Gipson, Billy Gresham, Edina Huhn, Janice Jerry, Cassandra Marshall, Tina Neal, Dawn Stingley Oatis, Brenda Pittman, Betty White, and Penny F. White as substitute teachers; Bonnie Robbins as cafeteria cashier at Columbia Primary School; and Tanya Baggett as Food Service secretary/bookkeeper.

 

·        Accepted the opportunity to host an Air Force Junior ROTC program at Columbia High School beginning January 1, 2002.

 

·        Received the monthly financial status report.

 

·        Was informed of a broadcasting proposal received from WCJU-FM.

 

·        Discussed confidential matters in executive session.

 

·        Granted Mrs. Regina Allen, librarian at Columbia Primary School, a one-year leave of absence.
