REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, SEPTEMBER 12, 2002

 

            The Board of Trustees:

 

·        Approved minutes of previous meeting.

 

·        Received the monthly financial status report.

 

·        Heard a report from Mrs. Janet Weiskopf, Director of the Columbia Educational Foundation.

 

·        Heard a report on district building projects.

 

·        Approved final payment to South Central Roofing & Sheet Metal Company for the new canopy at Jefferson Middle School, canopy re-roof at Columbia Elementary School, and re-roof of the Administration Building.

 

·        Approved the Claims Docket for payment of accounts.

 

·        Acknowledged the report on bus repairs/expenses and the monthly report on the use of school buses for special events.

 

·        Accepted a cash donation from Mr. & Mrs. Wayne VanHorn for the purchase of weight-room equipment.

 

·        Accepted a proposal from Bruckner's School Photography for school pictures at Jefferson Middle School, Columbia Elementary School, and Columbia Primary School, K-1.

 

·        Accepted a proposal from Mississippi School Pictures, Inc. for school pictures at Columbia Primary School, 2-3.

 

·        Approved the following fundraiser requests: "The Design Company" at CHS, to set up and operate a booth at the annual Historical Society Flea Market; CHS Show Choir, Great American Opportunities (candy & gift sale); CHS Tennis Team, sell t-shirts; JMS PTA, "Wildcat Spirit" card; JMS Show Choir, Great American Opportunities (candy & gift sale); JMS Band, Great American Opportunities (candy & gift sale) and Community Discount Cards; and JMS Junior Beta Club, candles in a jar; and CPS (K-1), Fall Festival - October 15, 2002.

 

·        Approved requests to discard and remove from the district's fixed asset inventory the following equipment that is beyond repair: file servers, tag #s 2391 and 2392; filmstrip projectors, tag #s 223, 2223, 2224, 2225, 2226, 2227, 2228, 2229, 2230, 2231, 2232, and 2479; tape recorders, tag #s 2474, 2477, 2237, 2235, and 2476; pre-viewer, tag #s 2233 and 2478; 16mm projector, tag # 2473, opaque projector, tag # 908; slides, tag #s 933 and 940; zip parallel port, tag # 2208; computer, tag #2074; and printer, tag # 2368.

 

·        Approved requests for permission to travel out-of-state.

 

·        Granted permission for third grade classes to travel out-of-state on a field trip to Franklinton, LA to visit the Mile Branch Settlement and Old McDonald's Farm on October 17, 2002.

 

·        Gave second approval of revisions to the following district policies: GCBA "Teacher Aide/Assistant Teachers-Qualifications and Employment" and Job Descriptions - GBBACE "Special Education Teacher Assistant", GBBAEB "Federal Programs Teacher Assistant", GBBAJG  "Physical Education Teacher Assistant", and GBBAKN/GBBALK/GBBAME "Teacher Assistants".

 

·        Approved requests from employees, living out of the district, for their children to attend Columbia schools.

 

·        Accepted a memorial statue of Walter Payton from the Walter Payton Memorial Committee.

 

·        Gave first approval of revisions to district policy DR (EBH) (KG) "Use of School Facilities".

 

·        Approved the recommendation to charge Columbia High School students a fee of $75.00 per 1/2 unit for credit recovery.  Students will be allowed to use the Nova Net program during after school hours under the supervision of a trained Nova Net Instructor to earn Carnegie unit credit needed to meet graduation requirements.

 

·        Accepted a student released from the Jefferson Davis County Schools to attend Columbia schools as a tuition student.

 

·        Approved the recommendation to expel a student out-of-school for the remainder of the 2002-2003 school year.

 

·        Approved amendments to the FY 2003 budget.

 

·        Approved the employment of the following persons for the 2002-2003 school year: Alecia Shiers as a teacher at Jefferson Middle School; John H. Johnson as a maintenance worker; Jamie Hilburn as a substitute cafeteria worker; Amanda Bennette, Linda Breakfield, Valerie Breakfield, Teresa Brumfield, Ruth Crosby, Mark Fite, Tabatha Franklin, Kim Gibson, Phil Graves, William Kraemer, Lillie McNair, Keonna Mark, Renea Prine, Pamela Williams, and Vicky Young as substitute teachers; Baxter White, Jr. as district bus driver trainer; and Angela Johnson, Kimberly Todd, and Robert White as Saturday School Instructors at Jefferson Middle School.

 

·        Approved the recommendation to compensate employees for additional time worked beyond their contract.

 

·        Discussed a confidential personnel matter in executive session.

 

·        Was informed of scheduled tours of district schools; recognition received from the Mr. Phil Bryant, State Auditor, for fixed asset management; board development for 2002-2003, nominations for MSBA Board of Directors; and the NSBA Inside School Law publication.
