REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, APRIL 10, 2008

 

            The Board of Trustees:

 

·        Approved minutes of previous meetings.

 

·        Approved the design development for the Columbia High School fieldhouse project and granted authorization to advertise for bids.

 

·        Received the monthly financial status report.

 

·        Reviewed bids received for the Columbia Primary School Administrative Suite Project and voted to table the recommendation.

 

·        Approved the claims docket for payment of accounts.

 

·        Acknowledged the report on bus repairs/expenses and the monthly report on the use of school buses for special events.

 

·        Gave second approval of revisions to School Board Policies “GBN” Suspension, Removal, and Non-Renewal of Employment of Certified Personnel; “JAA” Equal Educational Opportunities; and “JC” Code of Conduct.

 

·        Gave second approval of the job description for Director of Special Services.

 

·        Approved the following fund raiser activities: CHS Football Booster Club to host a spring football jamboree game with concessions on May 17, 2008; and JMS Cheerleaders to sell raffle tickets for a $100.00 Wal-Mart gift card April 14 – May 2, 2008 and to hold an end-of-school dance on Friday, May 2, 2008.

 

·        Authorized the disposal of the following equipment that is beyond repair:  one cell phone, tag #1908, one pressure washer, tag #620; two printers, tag #s 3376 & 2896; one computer, tag #3389; and one VCR, tag #4687.

 

·        Accepted a grant from the Columbia Educational Foundation, Inc. for funding a “Test Prep/Review Class” at Columbia High School in the amount of $4,300.00.

 

·        Approved a request from a district employee for permission for her children to attend Columbia schools for the 2007-2008 school year.

 

·        Approved the request for authorization for the Columbia High School Band to travel out-of-state to Chicago, IL to participate in the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade in November 2008.

 

·        Approved the allocation of Title I resources to serve Columbia Primary School and Columbia Elementary School for the 2008-2009 school year.

 

·        Approved the recommendation to offer seniors the opportunity to earn credit recovery by attending an after-school class and to hold Saturday school at Columbia High School for students to obtain credit in classes due to excessive absences.

 

·        Accepted employment resignations submitted by Cynthia Reed, teacher assistant at Columbia Elementary School, effective April 1, 2008; Rebecca Mullins, bus driver, effective April 11, 2008; Brandy Sorrell, teacher assistant at Columbia Primary School, effective March 14, 2008; Rachel LeBlanc, secretary/bookkeeper at Jefferson Middle School, effective May 30, 2008; Bethany Parker, 7th grade science teacher at Jefferson Middle School, effective       May 30, 2008; Latoya Thompson, librarian/media specialist at Jefferson Middle School, effective May 30, 2008; Angela D. Johnson, counselor at Jefferson Middle School, effective June 12, 2008; Karen Johnson, case manager, effective June 30, 2008; Katie Bell, math teacher at Columbia High School, effective May 30, 2008; and Lovalyn James, kindergarten teacher at Columbia Primary School; Martha Allmon, science teacher at Columbia High School; and Maryanne Simpson, English teacher at Columbia High School, for the purpose of retirement at the end of the 2007-2008 school year.

 

·        Approved the employment of Tracy Winton to facilitate Saturday School on April 12, April 26, May 3, May 10, and May 17 from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon at Columbia High School; Linda Young as a bus driver; Aretha Woodson as a substitute cafeteria worker; a Columbia High School teacher to serve as the credit recovery-Plato facilitator; Rob Knight as the extended school facilitator, June 9 – July 10, 2008; Robert Cheatham as the driver’s education teacher, June 5 – July 11, 2008; and Jennifer Branch and Dameshia Reese as extended school year teachers on an as-needed basis, June 9 - July 10, 2008.

 

·        Approved certified employment recommendations for the 2008-2009 school year.

 

·        Heard a report from the Superintendent on the district’s previous and current graduation rates.

 

·        Was informed of a goal setting meeting scheduled for 4:30 p.m., Monday, May 5, 2008, with Dr. Mike Waldrop, Executive Director of the Mississippi School Board Association.
