The Board of Trustees:
· Reelected the following trustee officers for 2003: Mr. Gus Markins, School Board President; Mr. Billy Rawls, Vice-President; and Mr. Charles Boston, Secretary.
· Approved minutes of previous meeting.
· Presented certificates of recognition to Mrs. Frances Robertson, CHS Teacher of the Year/District Teacher of the Year; Mr. Billy Royston, JMS Teacher of the Year; Mrs. Jerri Jones, CES Teacher of the Year; Mrs. Carolyn Simmons, CPS (2-3) Teacher of the Year/National Board Certified teacher; and Mrs. Angela Smith, CPS (K-1) Teacher of the Year.
· Discussed a report from Dr. Long on the district's report card.
· Heard a report on district facility improvements which included plans to build a new bus shop and additional classroom space at Columbia Primary School and upgrade the freezer at Jefferson Middle School.
· Was informed of a change in the district's security service from ADT to Phillips Doby.
· Authorized the district to enter into a contract with Albert & Associates to pursue building a new bus shop and additional classrooms at Columbia Primary School.
· Received the monthly financial status report.
· Authorized the Superintendent to request the State Department of Treasury to advertise for depository bids for the district for a one-year period.
· Approved the claims docket for payment of current accounts.
· Acknowledged the report on bus repairs/expenses and the monthly report on the use of school buses for special events.
· Approved a request for permission to travel out-of-state.
· Approved a request to dispose of the following equipment which is beyond repair: three printers, tag #s 2551, 2548, & 2610; one dryer, tag # 548; and one computer, tag # 558.
· Accepted employment resignations submitted by Keith Branch, bus driver, and Junior Akins, janitor at JMS.
· Approved the employment of the following persons for the remainder of the 2002-2003 school year pending the results of a current background check as required by state law: Brandi Fortenberry as a teacher assistant at CPS, 2-3, Terry Montgomery as a bus driver, Mandy Abram as a substitute cafeteria worker, Rebecca Selman as a substitute teacher, William Watts as a janitor at JMS, and Connie Copeland as math teacher at CHS.
· Was informed of Columbia Elementary School PTA plans to support an after-school tutoring program and plans to complete a special outdoors classroom project for the CES campus, dual accreditation received by the district from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA), the MSBA 31st annual conference, and the 2003 trustees election calendar.
· Recessed the meeting to continue at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, January 12, 2003, for the purpose of discussing superintendent and board evaluations.
