REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, January 8, 2004

 

            The Board of Trustees:

·         Reelected the following trustee officers for 2004: Mr. Gus Markins, School Board President; Mr. Billy Rawls, Vice-President; and Mr. Charles Boston, Secretary.

·         Approved minutes of previous meeting.

·         Presented certificates of recognition to Beth Boutwell, District Teacher of the Year/CES Teacher of the Year; Mary Beth Golson, CPS, K-1 Teacher of the Year; Loren Monk, CPS, 2-3 Teacher of the Year; Sara Davis, JMS Teacher of the Year; Michael Novinski, CHS Teacher of the Year; and Regina Allen upon receiving national board certification.  Maryanne Boutwell was recognized for receiving national board certification but was unable to attend the meeting.

·         Acknowledged a concern regarding fees charged for the use of school facilities.

·         Heard a report on district building projects.

·         Received the monthly financial status report.

·         Approved the claims docket for payment of accounts.

·         Acknowledged the report on bus repairs/expenses and the monthly report on the use of school buses for special events.

·         Gave second approval of revisions to district policy IFBG "Computer Network Acceptable Use".

·         Approved requests for permission to travel out-of-state to attend conferences.

·         Approved requests to discard the following equipment that is beyond repair: one calculator, tag #1136 and one AS/400 computer system, tag #2499.

·         Authorized the CHS Band and Band Boosters to conduct the following fundraising events: Krispy Krème donuts/donut cards sales during January and February and a ribeye steak dinner to be held on Saturday, May 1, 2004.

·         Granted the CHS Entrepreneur Skills class permission to travel out-of-state to attend the Jewelry Market in New Orleans, LA on January 27, 2004.

·         Accepted a student released from the Jefferson Davis County Schools to attend Columbia schools as a tuition student.

·         Authorized the district to submit an E2T2 application for a grant under Enhancing Education through Technology.

·         Approved the recommendation to expel a student out-of-school for the remainder of the 2003-2004 school year.

·         Gave first approval of a job description for a District Computer Technician.

·         Discussed confidential personnel matters in executive session.

·         Authorized the district to submit applications for one-year educator licensure.

·         Accepted employment resignations submitted by Sgt. Ralph Waller, JROTC instructor at Columbia High School; Ms. Malia T. McCarthy, special education teacher at Jefferson Middle School; and Ms. Geraldine Hampton, teacher assistant at Columbia Primary School (2-3).

·         Approved the employment of Ms. Geraldine Hampton as a special education teacher at Jefferson Middle School, Mrs. Jami Owen as a Biology teacher at Columbia High School pending licensure, Mr. Calvin Newsome to supervise In-school detention students and to supervise after-school detention students on an as needed basis; Ms. Bonita Graham as an Alternative Education teacher assistant at Columbia High School; Mr. Bruce Ratcliff to supervise after-school detention students; and Mrs. Cathy Cotton, Mrs. Barbara Davis, Mrs. Jerri Jones, Mrs. Stacey Prine, and Mrs. Renee Sims to conduct after-school tutoring sessions at Columbia Elementary School.

·         Granted an employee maternity leave.

·         Approved the recommendation to add Karen Leanne Bilbo, Hollie Ann Gore, and April Markins to the district's substitute teacher list for remainder of the 2003-2004 school year.

·         Authorized the district to enter into an agreement with Mr. Augustus (Trey) McGarity as a consultant to review and revise district job descriptions.  

·         Was informed of MSBA Board Development to be held January 12 & 13, 2004, at the PRCC campus in Hattiesburg.
